"Moonfire"This is the autumnal scene, high in the Sierras, that I was originally prevented from doing because of the three or four feet of snow between me and the location. So I went back last year before the snows came and made it to the lake. These are all subjects I love to paint: fire, light, water, reflections, trees, and rocks. It's all there. I wanted to paint a fall scene because only then can you find so many more subtle colors on the ground - everywhere you look. This is a wide panorama looking from one side of the lake to the other. Although the lake is not a huge one, the amount of things to enjoy is pretty broad. When I go camping in places like this, it's magical and enjoyable at this time of day, just before, at, and right after sunset, when the light is changing quickly and the whole landscape is falling asleep. I like to walk around and observe from lots of different points of view. A campfire is always so attractive, no matter how far away from it you are. In this image, the fire is immediate and hot. The moon on the other side of the horizon, in the infinite distance, is cool and gentle. It creates a wonderful balance. This is an incredibly beautiful and inspiring place to be. Now you can visit it, too, because I painted this for you. - Stephen Lyman About Stephen Lyman(From COA) Stephen Lyman was an explorer who specialized in painting the most elusive moments in nature. His inspiring work was inspired, in turn, by the writing and teachings of famous naturalist, John Muir. “Muir wrote, ‘Climb the mountains and get their good tidings,’” Lyman said. “I know exactly what he meant.” Lyman’s love of the great outdoors stemmed from a childhood spent in the Pacific Northwest, where hiking in Snake River country was a regular family ritual.Lyman’s desire to share his admiration for the outdoors was strong, but he enrolled in the Art Center School of Design in Pasadena, California, to learn more about the commercial art field. He started his career as a commercial illustrator in Los Angeles and soon realized that the call of the wild was stronger than the lure of the city. Returning to Idaho, he spent two years exploring and developing his own style of painting. He continued to discover the wonders of the natural world, and of living a natural lifestyle. “All my paintings have their origins in my experience and perception of beauty in the wilderness,” he said.Lyman’s first limited edition print was published by The Greenwich Workshop in 1983. In subsequent years, he was a frequent participant in the prestigious international “Birds in Art” show at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum. He was invited to be “Artist of the Year” at the 1991 Pacific Rim Wildlife Art Show and then received the rare honor of being invited back as an “Encore Artist” at the 1995 event.Stephen Lyman actively shared the wonder of the natural world with a legion of collectors until his untimely death in 1996. He had been recently named one of the top artists in the country by U.S Art magazine, and his book, Into the Wilderness: An Artist’s Journey, was published to unanimous acclaim in the autumn of 1995. Please Note This is an artist signed limited edition print numbered 3887 of 7500. The approximate dimensions of the print's protective outer sleeve are 20.5" x 45.5". The signature is tough to see on this one, but it's there. Please pay close attention to the pictures. You will notice that there is a faint mark on the white border (right hand side) of the print. I was told that such marks are generally erasable, but I cannot be certain of this. We did not try to erase the mark.
